WRITERS’ TEARS
19th and early 20th century Ireland was a golden era both for Irish whiskey and, perhaps coincidentally, for great Irish novelists, poets and playwrights. The Irish whiskey barons, rebelling against the emergence of what they saw as inferior grain from Coffey Stills, were protective of the traditions that had made their success possible.
At that time, one whiskey style was held high above all others: the ‘champagne of Irish whiskey’ – a master blend of pot still and malt whiskeys, both distilled in copper pots. It was enjoyed by many of the great Irish writers of the day…. of course less for its inspirational qualities than its full-bodied, flavoursome taste and creamy texture! It was said that they enjoyed it so much, that when they cried, their tears were of whiskey.
Walsh Whiskeys‘ Writers’ Tears is a critically acclaimed, award-winning recreation of the fabled 19th century whiskey. A truly unique expression that is embedded in history.

Writers’ Tears Copper Pot is a recreation of a fabled whiskey favored in the 19th century by literary greats such as Joyce, Beckett & Bernard Shaw to name a few. The flavor and complexity produced by uniquely combining both pot still and malt in one whiskey is what appealed to the artistic and eclectic individuals of the time and why it became know as the “Champagne of Irish Whiskey”. The marriage of one cask, two grains & three distillations delivers a whiskey bursting with creativity and attitude.
